New Title – The Lonely Lighthouse Bogle

To coincide with International Lighthouse Day, International Lighthouse Heritage Weekend and International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, The Lonely Lighthouse Bogle by Lindsey Millar & Vivien Sárkány will be published and available from August 20th 2023.

Bogle lives all alone in a lighthouse on a small Scottish island. Despite trying, he can’t find a friend, until one day he discovers a message in a bottle from someone who is lonely too . . .

A bogle is a Scots term for a ghost and the text is peppered with some Scots words, such as 'scunnered' and 'lum', making it a fun introduction to the language for little ones. Each double spread also has a secret spider to find and young readers will enjoy spotting it as they turn the pages.

A quirky rhyming tale celebrating the magic of friendship.

The striking illustrations were created as a series of paintings by Lindsey Millar using a mixed media palette of acrylics, ink and pencil. Graphic design and digital elements were added by Vivien Sárkány.

The story features two of Scotland’s outstanding lighthouses: Eilean Glas and Start Point. Eilean Glas, with its distinctive red and white horizontal stripes, is found on Scalpay in the Outer Hebrides and Start Point, the only Scottish lighthouse painted with black and white vertical stripes, stands on Sanday in the Orkney Islands. Facts about both lighthouses are included at the end of the book to engage interest in these amazing structures.

The Lonely Lighthouse Bogle is a simple, soothing story of companionship, aiming to increase children’s appreciation of lighthouses.

The title received funding from the Northern Lighthouse Heritage Trust. Part of the proceeds from the book will be donated back to the charity to support their aim of preserving and promoting awareness of our lighthouse heritage.
